Hello Monday!
today I have a special treat for you….
remember back in the fall, I designed some projects for Melissa Ybarra of Iza Pearl Design??
Sunshine Serenade is Melissa’s new fabric line that is just now landing in shops…
today I am sharing my tutorial for making a set of this placemats using Sunshine Serenade…
let’s get started…
Supplies for a set of two placemats
Assorted 3.5 inch strips of Sunshine Serenade – could be fat quarters
½ yard of Pepper Chambray – 44 inches wide
½ yard of print for binding
½ yard of print for backing
Two pieces of batting about 14 x 20
Triangle ruler – I used a Tri-Tool ruler
Finished placemat is about 13 x 19
Seam allowance ¼ inch
This pattern is for the Confident Beginner
Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
WOF stands for Width of Fabric
Press seams either open or to the side, whatever your personal preference is.
I began by cutting 3.5 inch strip from each print.
Using a triangle ruler, I cut a pair of triangles from each print
Lay triangles in a pleasing arrangement and sew into a strip using 14 triangles.
Cut a 7.5 inch x 22 inches of chambray and sew to one side of the triangle strip.
Do this step for each placemat you are making.
Press seam
Repeat the above step using 4.5 inch x 22 inch strip on the other side of the triangle strip
Repeat this step for each placemat you are making.
Quilt as desired. I did some simple straight line quilting.
Trim each placemat to 13 x 19
For each placemat, cut two 2.5 inch WOF strips of binding and sew into one piece. Machine sew on binding and then either handsew or machine sew to finish placemats.
Your placemats are now finished and ready to use.
I hope that you have enjoyed this project!

Happy Sewing!
I love the simplicity of this project. Those colors and fabrics are really pretty and your tutorial is well-written. Thanks for sharing it. I can see these in different colors to match particular decor for gift-giving.
They are darling, but I’m trying to find some info on the “You are my sunshine” sunburst pillow that was in the Hawthorne Threads newsletter today.. Sure would love a tutorial on that. Fabulous!
