lucky penny tutorial

Welcome to my Lucky Penny wall hanging/centerpiece tutorial.  You may remember this photo I shared in early October.  Alison Glass graciously agreed to allow me to create a piece with her first line with Andover – Lucky Penny.

The finished size is 30 x 31 inches

This is a fat quarter friendly project.  I did use 1/2 yard for the border, 1 yard for the back and 1/2 yard for binding, or you could piece it as I did.

I began by cutting 2 and 2 1/2 inch strips of the entire line.  From the large main prints, I cut an 8 1/2 square and a 4 1/2 x 8 1/2 rectangle.

Initially I placed my large squares and rectangles first and then began constructing my strip units.

I sewed blocks in the first row together.

Row 2 is sewn together.  You can see on the right hand side that I will need to trim off the final strip just a bit.

Row 3 is now all together.

Now all the rows are sewn together and I am ready to add the border.  My border strips are cut 3 1/2 inches.

Love how the border fabric ties the whole piece together.

Sandwiched and pin basted, ready to quilt….

I decided a simple off center circle quilting would accent the fabric design.

Another view of the completed project.  I loved using the bike path print for the binding – the effect was perfect!  Thanks again to Alison for designing such fabulous fabric and allowing me to create a fun project.  Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!
